Having lived in various parts of North Carolina, ranging from the urban capital, rural Morganton, and now Chapel Hill where I attend school, I rooted my Zine in my experiences. It examines the tension between democratic civic duty, and the increasingly militaristic and violently nationalist rhetoric dominating Southern politics. I layered cutouts from voter registration, environmental imagery, and symbols of military command and institutional gridlock. These elements confront the urgency of community outreach against the political climate that feels “OUT OF CONTROL”. The piece asks, “What’s next?? - urging the viewer to both reflect on the dangerous possibilities bound to unfold and to challenge them to look beyond slogans and reflect on whether our institutions truly serve the public and our future. “Make America America Again” because the nation we intended it to be and the one we are living in today is completely unrecognizable.
